Hey everyone,

Welcome back to What I Made Wednesday! I took the last couple weeks off because you know – life. But I am so excited to be back with our featured guest Westi Haughey. As you may tell from the title of this blog, she speaks my love language, goat. I can’t wait for you to get to know Westi.
Much love,
KD ✌🏼

Hello, my name is Westi, and I’m a goat addict.

A dozen years ago I was working a rewarding but high stress job in marketing, spending two hours a day commuting, telling myself it would all be okay because someday I would own on a farm. At that time it was completely implausible, living in Santa Cruz, California, which was not only crowded, but housing was in the millions for even the most modest home (not to mention land). Somehow the vision of raising dairy goats, growing our own food and living in an old farm house, never relented. After the birth of our twins in 2008 the economy tanked and everything in life that seemed “sure,” no longer was.

We decided it was time to take a leap and settled in Southern Oregon in 2011, scooping up an amazing 72 acre property that had been home to a variety of farming operations since the 1880s. It even had that 1930s farm house loaded with character that we wanted (i.e. funky, in need of TLC, but good bones) and a 100-vine vineyard. We started small, getting a few chickens and canning the fruit from the many mature trees on the property, then opening a small roadside farmstand to sell our wares.

But the action really began a couple of years later when the goats I’d been dreaming of finally arrived! We started with a small herd of 4 purebred Nigerian Dwarf goats and I’m trying to keep it cool at around 20 currently (last year I said 10 was the max. Oops!). We still have our farmstand with our canned goods and eggs, but our primary products these days are handmade goats milk soaps and lotions, which took off like wildfire from our very first market.

Today the goats are my obsession and passion. We’ve built a herd I’m very proud of and love dearly with some of the finest dairy genetics in the country. I love sharing my joy for goats and the amazing things you can do with their milk! The twins are now 10 and our business operations continue to grow every year, if not every month (or day). It’s quite a journey, but farm life is truly the best life. I’m so glad I’m finally here.

We began making goat milk soaps to utilize the high fat, creamy milk of our Nigerian Dwarf goats. Our first batches were only meant to be gifts (not a business) but their popularity escalated so organically and quickly that we just went with it! We like creating something beyond the basic bar, selling only unique soaps in adorable 3-dimensional shapes, such as a sheep, owl, puppy or heart. It’s just as nice a treat for yourself as it is for others!
