On this week’s episode of The Rural Woman Podcast, you’ll meet Naomi De Ruiter who is a first-generation dairy farmer and the Modern Milkmaid at Birdsong Farm, where she raises registered Jersey cows and teaches cheese making classes. Naomi was 14 when she got her first cow, a Jersey-cross she named Blossom, and she fell head-over-hooves in love with her. Naomi’s experience in the dairy industry has included managing a small dairy farm, working in cheese plants alongside an award-winning cheese maker, and being a licensed milk hauler. In 2018, Naomi married her husband Ben, a third-generation Holstein dairy farmer. They currently live on his family’s farm in Armstrong, British Columbia, where Naomi works part-time with a specialty in calf raising while continuing to grow her business.
