Shifting Focus: Rebranding the Family Farm with Hannah Miller
On this week’s episode of The Rural Woman Podcast, you’ll meet Hannah Miller. Hannah is a 26-year-old farmer running her own business on her family’s 175-acre farm in central Massachusetts. She has about 500 egg-laying chickens, 4 dairy cows that produce raw milk, and a small herd of goats who go on “goat hikes” with farm visitors. Hannah has a passion for working with livestock, being outdoors as much as possible, and connecting her local community to an agrarian way of life.
The farm was an active dairy farm for many decades, but her family sold the cows in the late 90’s, and for the last 20 years it was more or less just a hobby farm. Many of the fields became overgrown, the barns fell into disrepair, etc.
Hannah graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 2017 with a degree in sustainable agriculture, with the goal of returning to the farm and putting it back into production. Hannah says “it has been an amazing journey to watch new life breathe into the old bones of this place, and to see our community rally around my desire to keep the family farm alive.”

“A friend of mine recommend I start listening to this podcast when I announced that I wanted to start a produce farm. I’ve dreamed of being a produce farmer, or just a farmer in general, ever since I was little. I started listening to this podcast and now I have more confidence in myself than I ever have. If I fail, I will try again. This podcast and the women who speak on this podcast have encourged me to be brave and do what I’ve always dreamed of doing! I would recommend this podcast to ANYONE. You don’t have to be a farmer, rancher, or anything like that to listen. I think this is a great podcast for all women. A great podcast of women supporting women!”
