If this retro motivational mud flap tells us anything, it’s that we’ve survived our hardest days. 🤟🏼❤️

Winters on the farm are typically hard for me. 2020, the year of the dumpster fire, is proving to be just the same. With more free time I get a bit more lost in my head. The to-do list is long but the motivation to get it done isn’t there. I know in my heart this too shall pass. Why? Because I’ve been through it before. Knowing this is my super power. The power that gets me through the tough times because I know it gets better. It always gets better.

On this week’s episode of The Rural Woman Podcast, you’ll meet Kayla Lobermeier. Kayla is one half to the mother-daughter duo creators of @underatinroof. She is a mother & wife, first-generation farmer, freelance writer, embroidery artist, and master gardener. She lives in rural Iowa and works a small flower farm with her family amongst one of the largest Amish settlements west of the Mississippi River. She spends her days tending to her garden, chasing chickens, reading Outlander, and sipping a hot cup of coffee. Kayla hopes to instill the idea of sustainability, creativity, and seasonal living in others.

I’ve been having a thought lately that turned into a conversation today with @underatinroof (pssst. She’ll be on the podcast this week 🎉)

We were talking about advice or words of wisdom that attracts the right customer, whether that’s online or local, to you. Kayla shared that being authentic to yourself and knowing who your audience is a big key to your success.

This brought me to sharing my thoughts on social media. Though socials are huge for marketing business or products, it’s also used to share our stories. Our stories that are unique to us no matter how mundane we sometimes think they are.

Please allow me this moment in time to stand on my soapbox: Sharing our stories and attracting the RIGHT people to engage with online is SO important. Growing a community > growing a follower count. I see the giveaways and the stars in peoples eyes gunning for the illustrious swipe-up feature. But tell me, is being able to provide a swipe up worth having people who love-to-hate, don’t understand your story, and/or are jerks worth it? Not in my books.

What am I getting at here? Be you. Be authentically you. Whether that’s a first gen. farmer trying to figure it out, a farm wife-mama rockstar with a shotgun seat on the Hot Mess Express or a seasonal goat wrangler who has a herd of barn cats trying to find their purpose in the winter months... seriously whatever it is, just do that. You’re enough, you’re awesome. Period. ✌🏼❤️

Organic Inspection part ✌🏼today.

As certified organic producers, we are subject to inspection every year. What does that look like? Well, in a typical year we’d have our certifier send our inspector to the farm where we’d show them around our fields, bins, etc. Then we’d sit down and go through the piles and pile of records and files.

Like many things in 2020, processes have had to adapt to the climate.

This year our inspector came out masked up in their own vehicle and drove around separately to inspect the different areas. Instead of sitting down at our kitchen table with us to go over paperwork, it was done with scanning, uploading, and Zoom.

Is it a lot of work? Yes. Is it necessary to uphold the integrity of certified organic production? Also, yes. That little symbol you see on your Canadian made/grown products have a lot of work and a lot of heart behind it.

Dahlia grew up on both a dairy farm, and a full time farm where her parents raised grass fed Belted Galloway beef cattle, produced hay, and grew market gardens for cut flowers in Lee, New Hampshire. Dahlia and her husband, Mark, both attended the University of New Hampshire for agricultural studies, and during and after, held many jobs that contributed to their ability to launch their own farm business.

Dahlia shares with us the competitive process that they underwent to obtain their now farm Chandler Pond Farm located in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. They have made Chandler Pond Farm their own where they are raising 100% grass fed beef, naturally raised pick your own strawberries and blueberries, PYO flowers, maple syrup, hay, a smattering of vegetables.

Seriously though, I have a confession... before I got here, I was 💯 team dog. But there’s something about farm cats eating the mice that would potentially be in my house that just makes me love them 😆

Some of you may have followed me for my sweet tractor driving skills or my mad field meal skills or my sweet podcasting skills (name that movie) and all your seeing is a bunch of cats - Welcome to my winters on the farm 😂

Having farm cats as the only ‘livestock’ to take care of during the winter months make my job pretty lax. I’m always in awe of the real deal ranchers and farmers who protect and love on their animals during those cold winter months. You guys are the real MVPs.

As for me, I’ll just be over here dreaming of the spring time herd 🐈😂

‘What do you guys do in the winter?’

It’s a question I hear a lot and since it’s currently winter in October 🥶🎃 We’re getting ready to sell our 2020 crop.
.
Buyers typically request samples of the crop prior to purchase. We send them a bag to have a look to see if it meets their criteria. If everything checks out we arrange to have the grain cleaned and then send it off to be processed. So many hands and industries working together to get yummy food on your plates 🍽
