Laryssa began keeping bees as a hobby in Philadelphia 10 years ago. She caught “bee fever” almost immediately and just a few years later moved across the country to take a job at an apiary in Hawaii. For the next 5 years, she worked for a commercial apiary caring for bees and educating visitors at their beekeeping museum. She then started her own bee farm, Bee Happy, where she sold comb honey to chefs and resorts in Hawaii.

There are times in life when you hear something that you know will forever be stuck in your brain. One such statement was said to me following an interview I did on The Rural Woman Podcast. This amazing woman said to me “Your whiteness is your Superpower”.

I have built a platform. I have built a business. I have done incredible things inside the Ag industry + had amazing opportunities. Have I worked for it? Yup. Has it been easier for me because I am a white? Also, yup. *please see White Privilege 101 for more info*

In the year 2020 we saw a flood of black squares &white agriculture influencers vow
to listen, learn, do better. Over a year later the squares have returned to their previously scheduled programming with posed shots of tractors and cows.

I am not superior over said influencers. I am simply here to use my superpower; to reshine the light on the utter lack of diversity in the mainstream agricultural space on social media. If the argument is that we can all do better… FFS some of y’all ain’t even trying.

For instance - last year I reached out to the June Dairy Month milk flip cup challenge. I thought in light of what was happening it was distasteful to even do such a challenge with the glaring white lens. After all, they were trying to serve the underserved populations all while excluding a major demographic from their campaign but, I digress. I was told that they didn’t have anyone in their immediate circle that represented the BIPOC Community in Agriculture and they didn’t want to reach out for clout.

Fair.

However, I found it sad that out of the thousands of follows and followers of the mainstream AGvocates that not a single one of them had thought to include and/or had a relationship with a BIPOC Farmer to invite them to join. The person I had reached out to assured me that they themselves had started to follow more BIPOC accounts to build authentic relationships in hopes to collaborate in the future and assured me that this challenge wasn’t exclusive. Again, I digress.

Roller crimping the rye 🚜

It feels kind of weird knocking down beautiful crop in June - but also extremely satisfying at the same time. 😂

It’s supposed to be wet and windy for the next couple days so we’re rolling down the crop before the wind lodges it. We’ll be seeding another crop into the rye once the rain dries up. Neat, eh?

I bought some clematis’ with the vision of a beautiful wooden arch down my rock path. Only later to find out that I’m too cheap buy a beautiful wooden arch 😅 so I rigged up these with some left over Baba branches.

I couldn’t be bothered to find a measuring tape when I started building this at 8:45pm so I used the next best measuring tool I had. SWIPE >> 🐊 multipurpose and stylish 😉

Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. And taller too.

This is my third season of goat wrangling, moving electric net and pounding posts. Here’s a few things I’ve learned:

- Have a plan before to start moving fence. Goats can sense when you’re not prepared and will escape. Seriously, it’s their super power.

- Have the next section of pasture close to the current one. Connect the sections if possible so no herding is required. AKA a freakin’ goat rodeo.

- Pound more posts than you think you have too. Especially if you live where it’s windy.

- once you’ve sweat your ass off pounding posts in the hot temps. sit back and watch them browse. Their happy tails, little snorts, and chomps are the BEST part.
