I took the long way home this week so I could meet this sweet human IRL.

Sarah from @happiness_by_the_acre is a name you’ll recognize if you’ve listened to @theruralwomanpodcast. She has supported me from the early days and has been one of my biggest cheerleaders.

There are people you meet that you just click with and Sarah is that person. We got to take a tour through the farm where I got to experience a couple of firsts.

One - I’ve never actually held a chicken before 😅 and TWO - I got to see a Kune Kune pig in real life. Needless to say I’m obsessed and need one (a Kune Kune, jury is still out on chickens 🦖)

Four years ago I attended my first Ag conference solo with the title Farmer on my name tag.

I was nervous - I didn’t know if I was allowed to call myself a farmer at that point. I heard from who were leaders in our industry, who had passion and grit. I learned from these trailblazers that we had the choice in how we showed up and what we chose to call ourselves.

I got to stand on that same stage this week.

It truly felt like a full circle moment for me. I can’t thank Iris @advancingwomeninagriculture for giving me the opportunity to share my story along with the incredible women of @theruralwomanpodcast with #awca2022.

I don’t know if I’ve ever met a farmer happy with the amount of rainfall they’ve got 😅

For us, it’s rained more in the last week or so then it has in years. Some folks have been flooded out of their fields and home. Others are burning up.

Something that blows me away day after day is the deep internal optimism this industry has.

This big goofy grin is a throwback from the first dump. The last, the gauge from the last few days. I don’t know if I’ve seen it this full in the last 5+ years.

Why do we need to specify ‘female farmers’ or

Why do we need to specify ‘female farmers’ or ‘Women in Ag’?

It’s a question that I get a lot. Typically from men, but from women too. This question comes from a genuine place (typically). They ask because they themselves, or their loved ones, have never been treated any different from their male counterparts. Which makes me genuinely happy for them.

I let them know, that until ALL folks in agriculture are treated with the same dignity and respect - I will continue to do the work to amplify the voices that are silenced or who get comments like these when they do speak up.

These are just a sampling of the responses myself and so many other Women in Ag receive when we share our stories. I don’t share for comfort or sympathy - I share in hopes that seeing it on your screen motivates us all to be better. Better to each other in our industry.

Here’s to those in the industry; I don’t care how you got here, thanks for being here and feeding us all 👊🏼❤️
