It’s a question I hear a lot and since it’s currently winter in October 🥶🎃 We’re getting ready to sell our 2020 crop.
.
Buyers typically request samples of the crop prior to purchase. We send them a bag to have a look to see if it meets their criteria. If everything checks out we arrange to have the grain cleaned and then send it off to be processed. So many hands and industries working together to get yummy food on your plates 🍽

What do you do with your fall leaves?
We’ve been collecting leaves from town and some from around the yard for the past three years to make static leaf compost. We use this compost to make extracts for our compost teas plus organic fertilizers.
.
If raking isn’t your thing 👉🏼GOOD NEWS! I shared an article today on my stories from the @ncc_cnc encouraging Canadians to keep leaves on their lawn. "By leaving a layer or two on the lawn, that provides insulation for insects and pollinators, butterflies and moths, and that's important because that's a food source for birds." Not to mention it’s great natural fertilizer for you lawn!

Anyone else catch themselves saying ‘PIVOT, PIVOT, PIVAAAT’ all throughout 2020 when plans change? 😂

Harvest 2.0 is underway and I’ve added Bad Mother Trucker to my resume ✅ Our cover crops didn’t quite turn out the way we expected so they were swathed and chopped. Instead of silaging the crop, we’ll be turning it into compost.
.
This is my first time driving truck for chopping and I have to say it was a little scary at first. Grain carting is more of a comfortable speed for me. Life in the cart at 2mph vs. 12mph in the truck feels REAL fast 🏎😂 Back behind the wheel tomorrow 🙌🏼

It’s only taken me 11.5 months to clean out the straw from Rudy’s Goat Shack since Taco & Larry moved out. If you recall, it had been snowy and I was sad soooo that was my excuse for not doing it back then... 😬😅oh well, off to the compost pile it goes & the shack is ready for some new critters in the spring 🙌🏼

We are at the end of September and the end of our series of Suicide Awareness & Prevention here on The Rural Woman Podcast. On today's bonus episode you'll meet Katie Lyons. @k_lyons16 grew up on a century farm in West Central Illinois raising hogs, beef cattle and growing row crops. Highly active in 4-H, this passion for agriculture eventually pushed her to pursue a career within the industry. After graduating from the University of Illinois’ Animal Sciences program, she has worked within some of the most influential agricultural companies including Cargill, Monsanto, and now Bayer Crop Sciences. Katie’s passion continues to help American agriculture “feed the world”.
.
With her husband John, Katie is raising two boys, Jack and Aidan, who are very active in 4-H and love all things farming, the outdoors, and dream of carrying on in some way the family farm tradition.It is not money, but love that pushes a farmer to pursue this vocation. Love that walks hand in hand with loss, heartache, and sometimes depression. Feeding the world is stressful. Even the strongest souls are not immune to its strain. After losing her father to suicide in 2013, Katie has combined her passion and loss into a mission; advocating for mental health on the farm. Katie is working to spread information on depression, anxiety and suicide in hopes of helping others seek the support they need before another family shares her loss.

On episode 75 of The Rural Woman Podcast, you’ll meet Leslie Bauer. Leslie and her husband Ricky reside on Rural Rhythm Farm in Dayton, Maryland where they raise corn, hay, rye and soybeans. @labauer5has a small high tunnel where she grows strawberries and other vegetable crops. They also raise a few cows and hogs.
.
Leslie and Ricky raised 3 amazing kids. The two oldest both have careers in agriculture, and their youngest, Jackie, was also pursuing a career in agriculture, when for reasons that will never be fully understood, she decided to take a different path, running ahead to Heaven in September 2018.
.
These days, in addition to her passion for agriculture, Leslie also has a passion for mental health. It is her hope that her story will touch others and let them know how much they really do matter and make a difference in this life.
