Loveland Acres is a working farm with hands on agricultural programming for kids from the city to connect with kids in the country. The reality is not all children are presented with the same opportunities, nor treated equally within opportunities. Loveland Acres are here to change that while empowering each and every child that steps on this land through multifaceted agricultural programming based around them, their abilities, their interests, their needs, and the stories they bring with them.

I married into farming back in 2016. Mr. WildRoseFarmer and I grow on our families certified organic grain and oilseed operation. It was never my intention to be an active member of the farm when we wed, but now I couldn’t picture doing anything else.

I am the resident farm cat rancher, goat wrangler on hiatus, and gopher huntress extraordinaire. I run our equipment and feed our crew.

A chronically ill former inner city special education teacher gone calf loving, goat toting, chicken chasing, duck herding, sheep shearing dairy farmer. Scarlett grew up on the heels of her dad and uncles on her grandparents’ livestock farm in IL hoping there would be a runt she could raise. Her peace as a biracial kid in a less than welcoming world was found in the barns, putting meat on the table for her family the bonus.

Scarlett’s Farm, lovelandacresfarm located in Southern Wisconsin, is a community focused farm committed to utilizing the diversity in plants, animals, and humans to do our part in ensuring the land is stewarded well, all children have a place to learn in the fields, and everyone has a seat at the table to celebrate hard work put in.

I have a confession. On Sunday, I cried over Oreos. OREOS PEOPLE. Let me explain.
.
We’ve been on the brink of harvest for what feels like for forever around here plus we had our organic field inspection today. Needless to say, anxiety had been tap dancing on my brain like Gene Kelly.
.
On Sunday I was drinking my morning coffee, enjoying a scroll through the socials and I saw all these beautiful deserts being made for field meals. All of a sudden I felt a wave of shame wash over me like I wasn’t doing enough. Instead of celebrating badass rural women ,as a collective, like I typically do - I compared how I am lacking. Feeding the crew is part of my farmer duty and it’s not often my meals are accompanied by any fancy baking.
.
I think it’s normal for these feelings to rise up every once and a while. We’ve all heard the saying comparison is the thief of joy but when you’re in the thick of it it can be hard to get out of.
.
Here’s my reminder to you (and to me): go easy on yourself and whatever you do today, let it be enough ❤️ oh, and don’t compare yourself to others on the internet. K. Bye. ✌🏼

Julia is a Jersey girl turned Okie, who got bit by the farming bug when she moved to Oklahoma and got a few backyard chickens for fresh eggs

They had an opportunity to partner up with another like minded family and began raising broiler chickens and holiday turkeys with them. They recently added 16 heritage pigs to the operation and a small herd of dexter cows that are ornery as all get out. The past two years their farm has grown by leaps and bounds.Julia loves the opportunity to raise and homeschool her kids on the farm and teach them the important responsibility of being good stewards of the land, the environment and the animals.

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room of many family farms... working with your spouse 🐘

I’m not going to sugar coat it - sometimes it’s terrible, sometimes it’s manageable, and other times it can feel super rewarding. We go through ebbs and flows throughout each season whether that be seeding, irrigating, or harvest. Each of these seasons come with their own challenge and own little wins.
.
We don’t get the luxury of going home after a long day and escaping our job (or our boss). Learning to work as a team with your spouse is something that takes time, patience and teaches hard lessons.

On this week’s episode of The Rural Woman Podcast you’ll meet Dallas James. Dallas is a farmer which is something that she never thought she’d say. A former professional musician, mom to three and wife to a police officer she was ready for a life change once she hit 40! Born in Europe to Canadian parents, the first 5 years of her life were spent in a small farming village. It meant waking up to the rooster’s crow and having to pause while a flock of sheep crossed the road. Her formative years were quite possibly influencing her future. In the first year of owning the farm, jamesfamilyfarm, they have acquired honeybees, laying hens, pastured chickens and their beloved Scottish highland cattle. They believe in treating their animals with love and kindness and have taken a bio dynamic approach. Admittedly they have tons to learn but are loving the challenge each day brings.

Lessons I’ve learned from my garden 🌱

Don’t compare your garden to anyone else’s. 🥕
.
You must tend to your garden everyday, even just for a short time. Water it. Feed it. Talk to it. 🥦
.
Don’t let the weeds or a droopy sunflower wreck your day 🌻
.
Don’t take it for granted. We only get one short growing season 🍅
.
Most importantly, be proud of how much you’ve grown 🥬

I grew potatoes in a bale. 🥔

They’re not perfect. Some are about the size of your thumbnail and others are a decent size. Some got enough water and some certainly didn’t. Lots more plants out there so we’ll see how the rest of them do.
.
Today has been a rough mental health day for me. I can’t pin point why, it just is what it is. I felt overwhelmed by my to-do list, a messy house, and just overall unease. As I laid in my bed at 1:15pm I made the decision I was going to go pull potatoes. I don’t know exactly why that was my plan when there were so many other things of higher priority but that’s what came to mind.
.
As I pulled up each plant, I was so grateful to see those little spuds. I didn’t care that some plants had one or 10 potatoes - I grew them. Some of the biggest most beautiful plants had nothing happening underneath the soil and some of the smallest ones grew the biggest taters.
.
We all have things going on underneath the soil that is hard, messy., and can be overwhelming. Get some sun, get some rest, drink lots of water - be the beautiful potato you were meant to be 🥔😉❤️
