It come's but once a year - Winter. Each and every year it come's and goes. Some years it seems short and fast others it can seem never ending depending on where you are living. For some people, the winter months can be difficult to navigate mentally. The severity can be different for each and [...]

We’re wrapping up our #CdnAgDay series on The Ru We’re wrapping up our #CdnAgDay series on The Rural Woman Podcast with a wife, mother and rancher from Nokomis SK. Krystal Nordick, @kdnordick, and her husband Troy raise commercial Targhee ewes and a Angus based cow herd. On today’s show Krystal shares with us why they chose to focus their energy on raising sheep in what is predominantly cattle country. We also discuss how the opportunity to start working with Canadian Wildlife Services has allowed them to continue to grow their operation while keeping their grazing costs low by utilizing their sheep to graze sensitive areas on the north end of Last Mountain Lake.

Here’s to those generations before us and the ge Here’s to those generations before us and the generations before them.

Tomorrow is #cdnagday. A day to celebrate Canadian agriculture. A day to bring special attention to our agricultural industry and the pride we share in growing food.

I’ve been thinking alot about the generation(s) of farmers who have been on this land long before I got here. My husband's father was raised here by his Ukrainian immigrant parents who all have helped build where we are today. I want to celebrate and give thanks to them. I also want to acknowledge the people who were there long before them. Our farm is located on Treaty 7, the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Nations, including Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai, the Tsuut’ina Nation and Stoney Nakoda First Nations. I give thanks to them who are the original people of agriculture and sustainability. Without their resilience, sacrifices, and knowledge of the land we all wouldn’t be where we are in agriculture today.

I am still learning about our family land and land across the country. I am discovering tragedies and injustices that have happened and continue to happen that I was ignorantly unaware of before. I am committed to continue to learn, ask questions and listen.

It’s my honour and privilege to grow food and be a part of the story of Canadian Agriculture.

Sooo I may be on #TeamSheep now 🐑🤷🏼‍♀ Sooo I may be on #TeamSheep now 🐑🤷🏼‍♀️😉

Seriously though, how could you not be with a barn full of this cuteness??

I had the opportunity to meet my friend Cara @prairie.smoke.ranch IRL the other day. I’m so grateful for our friendship and now that I know where she lives I’ll probably just hang out in her barn 😆

She is the sweetest and answered all of my noob sheep questions. I told her next time I come out I’m bringing the mic and we’ll record an episode of #TheRuralWomanPodcast with the ewes and lambs. What do you guys think of that??

P.S. her cat loved me. Are we surprised? 😂 #catrancher

Kylie and her husband Scott are first generation farmers who both grew up in rural Alberta but not on farms. Their farm, @lazuli.farms, started in 2017 with two pigs, 25 chickens and a goal to grow their own healthy nutritious food while showing their kids where food comes from.

We are slowly making our way to warmer temperature We are slowly making our way to warmer temperatures.

I’ve had countless conversations with my friends experiencing extreme abnormal weather this week where they ask “How do y’all live like this?” The truth is, we were built for it.

We have the infrastructure, supplies, tools and resources to make it through some pretty shit weather. Do things come up? Sure. Pipes and wells can freeze, equipment won’t start, etc. But it’s nothing we haven’t seen before.

My heart is with everyone who has lost their livestock, their homes, and sadly even their lives. A big thank you to @courtdehoff who has been living through this herself while sharing the wealth of knowledge from other farmers and ranchers. Now more than ever #agsupportsag 👊🏼❤️

On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast you'll meet Cathy R. Payne, Ed.D @guineahogbooks . Cathy retired from a thirty-three year teaching career in 2010. At age fifty-seven, she started a sustainable farm, Broad River Pastures, in Elberton, Georgia with her husband, Jon. The farm specialized in nutrient-dense food and heritage breeds of livestock. In her third year of farming, she discovered the Guinea Hog breed. It seemed like a perfect fit for an eleven-acre homestead. She became frustrated, however, about the scant information she could find about the hogs’ history and bloodlines. Cathy had experience with interviews, research, and writing from her doctoral program, so decided to write the book herself titled Saving the Guinea Hogs: The Recovery of an American Homestead Breed which we’ll speak about today.

Be sure to stay tuned to the end of the episode + check out the show notes as Cathy has given a discount code for listeners of The Rural Woman Podcast for her book! 📖

“I am where I am because other women helped me. “I am where I am because other women helped me. For that reason I’ll never stop helping other women” -- unknown

Connection. Building Community. Empowerment.

Those are my building blocks. That is what I strive to achieve when I share my story and the stories of other women in ag.

Though we may not farm, ranch, or homestead the same; we work towards the common goal of providing food to nourish our families and feed the world.

There is power in our connection.
There is power in our stories.

Sharing our stories with one another matters. Lifting each other up matters.
We are #womeninag 👊🏼❤️
